Protection Training
All levels of Protection Training are done for real world situations and not sport.
Protection Training, when it is done properly, is one of the most demanding and difficult dog training tasks that there is. All dogs can learn obedience, but few dogs can be trained to protect the handler.
I often hear people say, "My dog has not been trained in protection but I know that if someone came after me he would protect me." In 99% of the cases this is wishful thinking. In actual fact, most dogs, when threatened, will show avoidance and run away, leaving their handler to fend for themselves.
All Protection Training is dependent on the qualities within your dog. I will evaluate your animal to get the very best program for your dog.
Level 1 – Deterrent – Minimum 48 lessons
The Level 1 dog is trained to show an aggressive display on command. This dog will lunge, show teeth, and bark aggressively at the end of the leash towards any aggressor who tries to approach once his "protect" command is given. Weapons, yelling or other forms of intimidation will not cause this dog to back down. Although this dog will most likely bite if an aggressor physically challenges the dog, the Level 1 dog is not specifically trained in how to most effectively fight the aggressor as is the Level 2 dog. The Level 1 dog's main purpose is as a deterrent, which is usually enough for most situations.
Level 2 – Full Personal Protection – Minimum 48 lessons
The Level 2 dog will show the same aggressive display as the Level 1 dog on command. This dog will also be trained in how to most effectively win a fight with aggressors who physically challenge it by either striking it or by attempting to beat off the dog. The dog will also be trained to search your house or business for any threat and to fight until the threat has been neutralized. The dog will also be able to be deployed off leash to pursue and capture a fleeing person or to intercept a threat from a distance.
Protection training will not be considered unless you are enrolled in one of our obedience courses AND unless you can display to me that you have complete control over your dog.
Protection training is unlike obedience and done on a yearly basis. It usually takes two solid years and following my instructions on behavior.
